FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions about the Hampton Road's Classifieds
- How does the search work? Is it a boolean search?
- The search accepts multiple search terms and boolean operators. If you
enter two words, like "truck driver" the product will assume the operator "or" and return all ads that contain the words "truck" or "driver". If you enter the search term "truck and driver", the product will return only ads with BOTH of those words. A Synonym table is also included that will equate words like "chevrolet" with "chevy".
- How can I tell which day the ad ran first?
- Each ad has a date at the end, which tells the first day the ad was put online.
- How often are ads updated?
- Ads are updated nightly to reflect the next days ads in the newspaper. For instance, Monday's classifieds in the newspaper are actually online by 3AM. The product stores all in-column ads back to the previous Sunday's newspaper. You may choose to search Sunday's ads, today's ads, or all ads from the previous Sunday to today. If you do not check a box the product will return all ads in the system.
- Can I view ads that ran in the past?
- Only back to the previous Sunday. We do not currently archive the classified ads. If you know the date when the original ad ran, you may want to call The Virginian-Pilot's back issue department at 757-446-2000.
- I placed an ad in the newspaper but cannot find it online. Why?
- If you're looking for your Virginian-Pilot classified, try searching for your phone number in the "keyword" box. If you still can not find it, your ad may be considered a "display" ad, with graphics and artwork that we cannot put on the Internet. If you are unsure why the ad is not online call PilotOnline at 757-446-2989.
